Midterm >_<

Midterm didn’t go as well as I hoped it would have been, but oh well, it’s what makes college challenging, especially for me.

I’m A PC, and I’m A Mac… and I’m Stupid

Posted in Stupid, Technology on October 14, 2008 by Matthew

I have been writing online for a long time, about seven or eight years ago, but I only recently talk about things that deals with others and things around me. Most of the time, it’s a little personal journal that I don’t mind sharing with those willing to read, but now, it’s about things that are less superficial and more substantial (well, for some cases, cause I still do talk about myself quite a lot). Today is about the commercial PC vs Mac. Let me redefine society’s view on PC… Windows… O_O WHAT?!?!?!? This came about when I’ve been studying and I have the TV going on in the background, cause I’m pulling an all-nighter. So, here I am, taking a break and blogging, how typical of me ^_^

I am truly saddened by the fact that languages with lingos or bingos or even slang changes the meaning of a word. It wasn’t long ago I was a high school kid, and when I was a high school kid, PC was a PC, not the equivalent of Windows. PC stands for Personal Computer. This is just a shorter form of saying I have a computer. People would rather say “I have a PC.” in comparison to “I have a computer.” Maybe not everyone, but I would bet people would rather use the term PC than saying the word computer. Since when have we, the people, given Windows the higher standard of being a personal computer. Mac started this commercial, and personally, I didn’t think it was technically correct to begin with (which irates me), but I let it slide… until everyone started using that one same word. Mac, you have given me a reason not to like you, especially the people who thought up of the stupid marketing idea. Well, it was funny to be completely honest, but the term PC does not belong to Windows and I for one am definitely not happy for that fact.

I still use Windows as Windows and Mac and Mac. I some times slip in PC for Windows because of the people I talk with, but I catch my mistake and I correct myself most of the time. If I don’t, I give you the permission to correct me, because I deserve to be told I’m incorrect. PC (persona computer) as a term needs to bring back to society as something anyone and everyone that owns a computer can and should use. I have two PCs: My MacbookPro and my Dell Desktop. Guess what, I use both Windows XP and Mac OS X. Sadly, I have not gotten myself into Linux much, so I’ll stay out of it for now, unless someone gives me their old laptop to play with and install Linux on it ^_^

Please, give back the PC term to any computer and to the real meaning of personal computer. If you’re using a desktop, laptop, nettop, netbook, tablet PC, mobile PC, pocket PC, or whatever that has an OS (operating system) in it that works like a computer, as a personal computer (for your own use), then it’s a PC. Not PC == Windows. This is how it goes, Windows and Macs are PCs but PCs are not Windows or Macs. Simple? Got it? Good, that’s all you need to know.

This topic goes hand in hand with the term “CPU” as a pointer to the “CPU tower.” CPU is Central Processing Unit, not the tower itself. So, when someone ask you about your desktop, know that the essential items that make up a desktop are: a keyboard, a mouse, a monitor, and a tower. Your tower is your skull, your monitor is your eyes while keyboard and mouse are the hands and feet. Your skull is not the brain, neither is your tower, but you could consider the CPU as the brain. Got it? Good. I’m done telling people they’ve been taught wrongly, because at any time, you could easily research anything online. Wikipedia is a good source, even if it’s by people, because they’re also corrected by people and therefore, the most correct is usually left alone, unless there’s a funny fella who just feels like their right all the time and they disagree with what was written, that or if they just want to be annoying and thinks they’re funny.

If you ever hear me or see me announce PC as Windows and strictly Windows and not Mac, please, I welcome you to call me stupid and tell me where I have made that mistake, because we all need people around us to remind me, and I for one needs that more than anyone (I tend to forget things easily and very quickly).

As far the commercial for Windows trying to bring their image up, I think they should have corrected the term PC to Windows. That would definitely make them a lot smarter, especially for people like me who wants the right terms to be used correctly. I leave you with this:

English teacher teaches English for a reason, math teacher teaches math for a reason. If you ever get an English teacher to teach math and a math teacher to teach English, you might get very confusing students, or worse, students learning the wrong facts.

Midterms

Posted in College on October 12, 2008 by Matthew

Studying is annoying when it’s studying for quizzes, tests, or exams, but I still have to do it because I’m a student. That’s how they determine whether or not I’m worthy of finishing school because of the ability for me to maintain what I’ve learned in the semester, and it’s through tests and exams. Seriously, there has to be a better way for school to do this whole exam thing for students. Recently, SATs and ACTs have been brought to question (I don’t think it’s recently to be honest, but I heard it recently) whether or not they’re really standardize or not for high schoolers to take to determine their skills and knowledge to get into a college/uni. I for one already thought it was some kind of unfair test. When I took it, I was given a limited time to do a certain section and guess which section I take the longer and shortest? The longest ones are the ones I need to read. READ I tell you, only because I don’t have speed reading skills and my comprehension in reading takes that much longer. The quickest was math, without the words. Yup, math was straight forward and it’s probably the most universal language there is (I had a discussion with a friend about this not too long ago). Anyway, I personally have been much better with hands-on learning or working rather than reading and understanding things. I’m also much more into discussions to understand the point-of-view of others. I’m much more of a social learner than a sit-on-your-butt-and-memorize kind of learner.

Well, can’t be helped, if I want to graduate, I’ll have to adapt, and that I have done in the pass years of being in America.

Now, I’m going to study for my midterms next week. Don’t expect much update from me, unless I honestly feel I failed my midterms, then you’ll hear from me soon enough ^_^ Take care all and God bless!

Politics All Around

Posted in Politics on October 7, 2008 by Matthew

Tonight will be my first watch on the presidential debate (Debate number 2 tonight). I was advised to watch CNN, it’s the most neutral of sides as far as people are knowledgeable. If you’ve been keeping up with my recent rant, you already know where I stand with Fox.

I begin to think what is truth? How can we know for sure what the presidential candidates say are true or not? This, you will have to define for yourself. If you think what they both say is true, then that’s what you’ll live for, but I say research for yourself. The internet is filled with information overflow. Perhaps too much, even some to the point of it being untrue. So, be smart about it. This is where intelligence, wisdom, knowledge, and experience come in play. For me, I don’t have any of those when it comes to politics, but I’m willing to listen to any side that’s willing to tell me the truth.

If I were to put myself in someone’s shoes, I would say I’m one of the undecided voters. I’m very undecided on things, I’d rather sit back and listen to get the knowledge of both sides, but what if I were to put in a position to choose? That’s when I started thinking, I should learn a little.

I got to talk with a co-worker, and he’s pretty sure of who he’s going to vote for, but we started talking about religion in politics. I’m a Christian, but it doesn’t mean I’m a Republican. The fact that Republican has taken the stance of religion just makes it as though the Democrat doesn’t care about religion. I can’t see that being entirely true. If I were to be a Democrat, would I be seen as not-religious or to betray my religion? Well, regardless, my religion is a separate matter. Why does something such as pro-life/pro-choice or gay marriage/not be separated once again between the R(epublican) or D(emocrat)? What about death penalty? I did a little research and found that most death penalties were executed in the red states. Red states are Republicans and if I were to say where the religion is at, I don’t believe (as a Christian) that we should kill. Where’s the logic at? I people deserve to be killed for what they did, then people should be allowed to choose for what they did. Here’s what I thought of the choice of word… why Pro-choice and Pro-life?

Politics doesn’t only live in America. It seems the smart ones know what they want, but are they being heard?

So, the next time you say you are voting for McCain or Obama, I would like you to think why and not only because you’ve heard from other people, or from the news (especially only from one channel), but you’ve also done some research and know what each presidential candidate stands for.

In all honesty, I would rather be playing LittleBigPlanet now.
